5 Tips for Safely Using Candles in Your Home
Five Tips to Prevent a Candle Fire
Candles are popular option for making your home smell great and creating a peaceful, intimate environment for you and your guests to enjoy. However, it is important to remember that a candle involves an open flame which can spread under the right conditions. If you choose to use candles in your home in Far North Dallas, TX, follow these five tips to prevent a candle fire from occurring.
1. Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended
In many cases, fires causes by candles happen when someone leaves their home or falls asleep with a candle still burning. Only light candles if you plan to remain in the room.
2. Place Candles on a Safe Surface
If the candle remains upright, the surrounding glass can get very hot and cause flammable objects to catch fire. Only place candles on safe, sturdy surfaces like wood that will not easily catch fire.
3. Supervise Young Children and Pets
Avoid a candle fire by leaving candles far from the reach of pets or children. Don’t put them on the ground where they can be ran into, and keep a close eye on cats or toddlers who are curious about the flame.
4. Place Candles Away From Flammable Objects
Never place a candle within close proximity to a flammable object like drapes, blankets, books, or linens. As a good rule of thumb, keep candles at least a foot away from anything that can easily catch on fire.
5. Toss Candles Before They Reach the Bottom
Prevent a candle fire by never allowing a candle to completely burn all the way down. Instead, toss out solitary candles with 2 inches of wax left or contained candles with half an inch of wax left.
While these fire safety tips are effective at preventing fires caused by candles, accidents still happen. If a fire does occur, you will need to call fire cleanup services to perform a smoke cleanup on your home and belongings right away.
